Is Zoloft (sertraline hydrochloride) a good medicine for gynecomastia?

Like rubbing salt to a wound, some antidepressants may cause further anxiety and unwanted embarrassment because of their side effects like gynecomastia, colloquially known as man boobs. Zoloft, an antidepressant generically known as sertraline hydrochloride, has been implicated a few times for the development of gynecomastia in some of the patients taking the drug.

One study revealed that a 67-year old man developed gynecomastia when sertraline hydrochloride was introduced to his regular medication. The enlargement and tenderness of the breasts escalated as the dosage of the drug was increased. Meanwhile, when the administration of the drug was discontinued, the side effects were swiftly resolved.

This case is the only one with concrete evidence which directly links sertraline hydrochloride in the formation of man boobs. Such side effect, though possible, is considered rare. Moreover, taking sertraline along with other drugs may also be considered a contributing factor in increasing the risk of gynecomastia.

Zoloft is prescribed to treat patients with depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and anxiety, among others. It aids in stabilizing the chemical imbalances in the brain of people living with such complications. Radical side effects of this drug are seizures, manic episodes, agitation caused by the spiking up of serotonin in the body, and severe weakness due to the body’s diminished sodium levels. Once these conditions are observed from a patient, a doctor’s attention should be sought. Other side effects include lethargy, fatigue, stomach problems, poor appetite, insomnia, and impotence. Most sources do not mention gynecomastia as a side effect.

Statistically, about 10-25% of gynecomastia cases are derived directly or indirectly from drug use. Certain chemicals that are active ingredients in the drug can mess up the production of testosterone and estrogen in the body. The drugs could hinder the production of androgens, increase estrogen levels, or even mimic estrogens. The mammary tissues are consequently affected by this instability, becoming enlarged as estrogen is increased.

Having man boobs is embarrassing. Not only does it degrade your body image, but it is also a social deterrent, with those afflicted being continuously teased and bullied. Sexual relationships are also affected because having enlarged breasts is typically a female feature and is considered to be undesirable in men. Some people may also develop anxiety from fear of acquiring breast cancer. Though it can be difficult to be living with gynecomastia, one should not lose hope. There are online forums, resources and support groups to help individuals suffering from the condition.

Gynecomastia sometimes causes mild and irritating pain of the breast, but it is usually benign. It is normally just a growth of the breast tissues, and is not a tumor. If you think that you are suffering from gynecomastia because of the medications you are taking, consult your doctor about it. The discontinued use of the drug may simply be the solution to the problem. A few people are even content to just letting it be, accepting the side effects of their medical regimen. Other treatments for gynecomastia include liposuction and corrective surgery. Counseling and peer support is also important in alleviating the psychological distress brought by the condition. Healing can be an arduous process and having a positive attitude is the best remedy.
