How to Lower Testosterone Levels (A Study in Avoidance)

Testosterone is produced and regulated by the hypothalamus, pituitary glands and the testes. Normally, humans produce 4mg to 7mg of testosterone each day. When one, some or all of the three components malfunction, then your testosterone level drops (among other things).

Why Is This Important?

You need to know how to decrease testosterone levels because you either want it or avoid the same. In case of the former, you want to have softer skin, a milder disposition, or you want to go vegan. In case of the latter, you are a young male who wants to keep his prime as long as possible.

Aging

On average, men start producing less testosterone when they reach the age of 30. After reaching the age of 50, testosterone levels drop faster. This results in a lot of physical and even psychological change in men. Simply put, men get less muscular and their temper even out.

Medication

Certain medication can lower testosterone levels. This may be taken in knowingly or unknowingly. In case of the former there are known testosterone blocker or cancellers i.e. estrogen. In case of the latter common examples are:

•Anabolic steroids
•cocaine
•Marijuana
•Methamphetamines
•Statin
•Anti-depressants

It goes without saying that you should avoid the illegal or regulated drugs stated above. But you should also be careful with component drugs of medication you are taking. If you really must know how to decrease testosterone levels, then consult a physician. Never self medicate.

Food Intake

The food you eat greatly affect your testosterone levels. By knowing what foods to eat (or not to eat) you can increase, maintain or lower testosterone levels. This is by spacing out or eating more specific foods.

Vegetarians are known to be healthier than most, but they also have lower testosterone levels. In part this is because they take in less testosterone boosting foods like certain proteins, and partly because vegetarians usually substitute meat for tofu. Tofu has components that bind sex hormones. This serves to slow down testosterone levels in men. On a positive note, tofu helps calm the nerves. On the negative side, you will produce less testosterone.

Carbohydrates and Sugars

More carbohydrates mean less testosterone. Add sugar to the mix and you have a recipe for testosterone disaster. That is probably why obese individuals have lower testosterone levels.

Medical Preconditions

Sometimes the genes you are born with result in lower testosterone levels. For example: those with liver disease, diabetes, kidney disease, pituitary dysfunction, etc. have a predisposition to have lower testosterone levels.

Environmental Factors

A polluted environment i.e. cigarette smoke, excessive carbon monoxide emissions, etc. lowers testosterone levels. That is why most smokers have lower testosterone levels.

Stress

Stress plays an important role in ALL bodily functions, including the pituitary glands. More stress, late nights at work, working the night shift, etc. will all lead to a lower testosterone level.
