What is Frankincense (Boswellia Serrata) and Does it help cure Gynecomastia?

Olibanum or more commonly known Frankincense is a sap produced by a tree called Boswellia Serrata (a tree that comes from the family of Burseraceae, Kingdom Plantae). The name Frankincense is a derived from an old French word “Franc Encens”, which literally translates to “high-quality incense”. It can be found in some parts of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, but is rampant in major parts of India. It thrives in dry weather and could withstand tropical climates.

Description:

-The tree could grow from moderate sized to large scale within 8 to 10 years.

-It sprouts tiny white flowers, which closely resembles a daisy.

-The fragrance of the sap depends highly on the soil and climate.

-Frankincense is the sap that the tree produces when the bark is tapped.

-The sap takes a tear-drop form when left to harden.

-The resin may come in different colors (dark green, golden brown or black).

-The older the tree is, the lesser sap it produces.

Uses:

Frankincense has been used by different cultures for more than 5000 years. Ancient people have been trading the hardened sap (resin) to other parts of the world to serve its many purposes. Here are some examples.

Religious Ceremonies

The hardened resin that was produced from the bark of the tree is used as altar incense in most temples during the early years. It is believed that the scent it emits while burning purifies and sanctifies the place.

Cosmetics

The essential oil that could be extracted by steaming the hardened sap is used to adding scent to skin care products such as lotions, shampoos, soaps and perfumes.

Aroma Therapy

Frankincense is known for its spicy and lemon-like scent. Spas and other wellness facilities that promote natural healing uses it to induce tranquillity and relaxation.

Herbal Medicine

There are various ways of using Frankincense as a remedy.

Hardened Resin

– Chewing and eating it directly cures digestive track illnesses and skin problems. It also helps in treating asthma and other respiratory related diseases.

-In some recent studies, it is used as an additive for anti-aging products.

Gum Resin

-The sap in its raw form could be applied directly to the skin. It contains anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that helps treat osteoarthritis, joint pains, mouth sores, muscle pains and ringworm.

Does it help cure Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia or man boobs is a condition developed by males during puberty. The significant enlargement of the breast may either be a physical manifestation of an underlying endocrinal disorder or obesity.

There is no known study that proves that Frankincense could help cure gynecomastia. And there is also no direct link that puts these two in the same equation. However, if you are going to base it from the information mentioned above, you could try using the resin, in gum form, as a natural remedy to help reduce the swelling along the breast area. The anti-inflammatory property found in the sap “may” have an effect, if applied on a regular basis and in moderation.
