Does Mango Treat Man Boobs?

Even if you don’t live in a tropical country, you might have already tasted a mango or at the very least a mango-flavored treat. This isn’t really surprising; mango may be a tropical plant, but it has gained a following all around the world because of its sweet juice and unique texture.

There are several species of mango, and one of the most common is Mangifera indica. It appeared to have originated from India and was brought to East Asia around 400-500 BCE. It reached the Philippines, Africa, and Brazil several centuries after that period. Nowadays, it’s commonly grown in places with tropical and subtropical climates.

Mangifera indica and gynocomastia

Mango has a place in alternative and complementary medicine because it has a lot of benefits to offer. Ayurvedic practitioners, for example, use the fruit to clear digestion and reduce acidity. It can also be used to treat diarrhea, vomiting, and bladder problems and can help in improving cardiac health.

Despite its many uses, though, Mangifera indica has not been found to directly help with gynecomastia (or the enlargement of a man’s breasts due to medications, hormone changes or imbalances, medical conditions, or substance abuse). There has not been any research that studied the effectiveness of mango in treating enlarged male breasts, and even alternative and complementary medicine do not consider the fruit to be a treatment for this type of condition.

However, if you have gynecomastia (which is commonly known as “man boobs”), this doesn’t mean that you can no longer eat mangoes. In fact, you can include Mangifera indica as a part of your diet so you can enjoy its sweet taste and take advantage of the health benefits it provides. But don’t consume too much of it, though; like any other fruit, mango contains high amounts of sugar and can increase your blood sugar levels if you eat too much in one sitting. High blood sugar, in turn, can wreak havoc on your body, exposing you to diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney complications, and other negative effects.

What to do if you have gynecomastia

Treatment is usually not needed since man boobs can go away on its own in two years or so. However, if the enlarged breast tissue is painful or tender or is causing embarrassment, you might want to consult your doctor about getting the right treatment. Your physician may prescribe you with medication that are used for breast cancer treatment, although they have not been approved by the Food and Drug administration for gynecomastia.

If your enlarged tissue hasn’t gone away over time, or if it still bothers you despite any medications you’ve taken, you may ask your doctor if you can have surgery. There are two types of surgery available: liposuction, which removes the extra fat that makes your breasts larger than normal, and mastectomy, which involves the removal of breast gland tissue. Your doctor will give you advice on which surgery is ideal for you.
