Kenalog Against Gynecomastia: Good or Bad?

Gynecomastia is known as the enlargement of breasts in men. If it is just because of fat build up, it can be removed non-surgically through proper diet and exercise. But if it is the type where breast tissues have developed, surgery is the best option to have it removed.

For the layman, it is commonly called man boobs or moobs.

Kenalog is a non-surgical treatment for scar tissue. It is an injectable scar treatment that operates by decreasing collagen disposition. It may be classified as corticosteroid medicines or simply steroids.

There is no proof that it can be used as a first hand treatment to remove gynecomastia. However, surgeons may advice patients to use such injection post-surgery if scar inflammation persists.

It may be Kenalog-10 or Kenalog-40. The number following the name is used to indicate the strength of the injection.

To use it as a non-surgical treatment against gynecomastia is not a good idea. Over dosage of the treatment in order to remove the swelling of breasts might result to complications such as open wounds, infection, and tissue necrosis. Anything that is taken in excess is not recommended.

It is not advisable to self inject it because it may lead to an imprecise location of breast tissue.

Another reason why it’s not a good idea to self-inject Kenalog is that the interval of injections is best left to surgeons. If a person wants a quick result over dosage of injection might lead to irreversible conditions.

A doctor should be the one to prescribe if there is a need for Kenalog injection during post-surgery. The doctor is the one to determine the dosage. The treatment is location dependent basing on where the scar inflammation appears. And before that, a doctor needs to determine and explain possible allergic reactions and side effects like the thinning of the skin.

Usually, it is after a few months that the surgeon will advise for its administration. However, there are cases when a surgeon will not suggest such option if the scarring is very minimal and is flat.

After the surgery, usually, the initial results are very promising with no signs of inflammation. However, it is only after weeks or months that an inflammation will occur in the breast area. It can be mistaken as a re-growth of man boobs but upon examination it will be identified as a scar lump or inflammation. Inflammation occurs as a part of the normal healing process. Hence, the surgeons will first suggest that finger massage be performed, but if scar inflammation persists, it is the time they will consider injecting Kenalog.

As stated earlier, the interval of administering Kenalog injection is left to the discretion of the surgeon. Some recommend a three to six weeks interval depending on the need. The injections typically start in low dosages until the maximum dosage is reached if the need occurs.

If Kenalog injection was done correctly, the results will be immediately noticeable.

However, if the scar is kenalog injection resistant another surgery might be recommended by the surgeon.
